Ultimate Ham and Cheese Sandwich Recipe Perfectly Gooey

ham and cheese sandwich - featured image

A perfectly gooey toasted ham and cheese sandwich with golden, buttery bread, melty cheese, and savory ham. Comfort food at its best!

Ingredients

  • Sandwich bread (white, sourdough, or whole grain)
  • Unsalted butter, softened
  • Thinly sliced ham (honey ham, smoked ham, or leftover holiday ham)
  • Cheese (Swiss, cheddar, or Gruyère)
  • Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Mayonnaise (optional)

Instructions

  1. Lay out your bread slices, butter, ham, cheese, and any optional additions like mustard.
  2. Spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice. This will be the outside layer to ensure a crispy crust.
  3. Layer ham and cheese on the unbuttered side of one bread slice. Add a thin spread of Dijon mustard if desired. Top with the second slice, buttered side facing out.
  4. Heat your skillet over medium heat until warm. A drop of water should sizzle gently when it hits the pan.
  5. Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on one side, pressing gently with a spatula. Flip carefully and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes or until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  6. Slice diagonally and serve immediately while hot and gooey.

Notes

Cook over medium heat to allow the cheese to melt without burning the bread. Use block cheese for better melting and experiment with add-ons like caramelized onions or spinach.
