These sliders combine smoky-sweet caramelized onions, melty Swiss cheese, and savory ham on buttery toasted buns for a quick, crowd-pleasing snack or meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 slider buns (preferably brioche or Hawaiian)
  • 12 slices deli ham or leftover baked ham, thinly sliced
  • 12 slices Swiss cheese (such as Emmental)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-low heat in a large skillet. Add thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir frequently for 20-25 minutes until onions are deep golden brown.
  2. Halfway through cooking onions, sprinkle brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce. Add a splash of water if onions start sticking.
  3. In a small bowl, mix remaining 2 tablespoons softened butter with Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and chopped thyme until smooth.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice slider buns horizontally, keeping them connected if desired. Place bottom halves in a baking dish.
  5. Layer ham slices evenly over buns, spoon caramelized onions on top, then add a slice of Swiss cheese on each slider. Cover with top halves of buns.
  6. Brush the Dijon garlic butter mixture generously over the tops of the buns.
  7. Cover dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 5 minutes until cheese melts and buns are lightly browned.
  8. Let sliders cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Caramelize onions slowly over low heat for best flavor. Use a splash of water to prevent sticking. Brush butter mixture on buns before baking for a golden crust. For extra crisp, broil 1-2 minutes after baking but watch closely to avoid burning. Sliders can be made gluten-free or dairy-free by substituting buns and butter/cheese accordingly. Leftovers keep well refrigerated for 3 days and reheat best in oven.
