A festive and foolproof recipe for tender, juicy spiral ham with a caramelized brown sugar glaze that’s perfect for holiday celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 710 lbs fully cooked, bone-in spiral ham
  • 1 cup light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C). Place the rack in the lower third of the oven.
  2. Remove the spiral ham from its packaging and discard the plastic disk covering the bone. Place the ham cut-side down on the roasting rack inside the pan.
  3. Cover the ham loosely with aluminum foil, ensuring it’s sealed but not pressed tightly against the meat.
  4. Bake the ham for about 10-12 minutes per pound, or until the internal temperature reaches 140°F (60°C). For an 8-pound ham, this will take approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.
  5. While the ham is baking, combine brown sugar, honey, Dijon mustard, butter, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, cloves, garlic powder, and orange juice in a small saucepan. Simmer over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens slightly.
  6. Remove the foil from the ham 30 minutes before the end of cooking. Brush the glaze generously over the entire ham, ensuring it gets between the spiral cuts.
  7. Return the ham to the oven uncovered and bake for the remaining 30 minutes, basting with glaze once more halfway through. The glaze should caramelize and form a glossy coating.
  8. Remove the ham from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

[‘Cover the ham with foil while baking to retain moisture.’, ‘Apply the glaze generously for a perfect caramelized coating.’, ‘Use a thermometer to ensure the ham is heated to 140°F (60°C).’, ‘Let the glaze thicken slightly while simmering for better adhesion.’, ‘Experiment with the glaze by adding cayenne for heat or swapping orange juice for pineapple juice.’]
