Irresistible Scalloped Potatoes and Ham Recipe for Easy Comfort

  • Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • Diced cooked ham
  • Thinly sliced onion
  • 4 tablespoons (60g) unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons (30g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (480ml) whole milk
  • 1 cup (240ml) chicken broth
  • 2 cups (200g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • Pinch of nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease your casserole dish lightly with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Use a mandoline or sharp knife to slice the potatoes and onions into thin, even rounds.
  3. In a large skillet, melt 4 tablespoons (60g) of butter over medium heat. Whisk in 4 tablespoons (30g) of flour, stirring constantly for 1-2 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  4. Gradually pour in 2 cups (480ml) of milk and 1 cup (240ml) of chicken broth, whisking continuously until smooth. Simmer for 3-4 minutes until thickened.
  5. Stir in 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Remove from heat and stir in 2 cups (200g) of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  6. In the prepared casserole dish, layer half the sliced potatoes, followed by half the onions, and half the diced ham. Pour half the sauce over the top. Repeat the layers, finishing with the remaining sauce.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
  8. Allow the dish to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
