A rich, decadent salted caramel dessert that perfectly balances sweet and salty flavors. Simple to make and versatile for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, heat 1 cup (200g) of granulated sugar over medium heat. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon until the sugar melts into a golden-brown liquid. This can take 5-7 minutes.
  2. Once the sugar is fully melted, add 6 tablespoons (85g) of unsalted butter, cut into cubes. Stir carefully as the butter melts—it may bubble up, so be cautious.
  3. Slowly pour in 1/2 cup (120ml) of heavy cream, continuing to stir. The mixture will bubble vigorously, so pour in the cream gradually to avoid splashes.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional) and 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt. Adjust the salt to taste.
  5. Let the caramel cool slightly before transferring it to your serving dish or jars. The caramel will thicken as it cools.

Notes

[‘Keep stirring to prevent the sugar from burning.’, ‘Use room temperature butter and cream to avoid caramel seizing.’, ‘Taste as you go to adjust the salt to your preference.’, “Caramel will thicken as it cools, so don’t worry if it seems runny at first.”]
