Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (regular or panko)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter (unsalted)
  • 1 finely chopped yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Optional: 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • Optional: Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls, yielding about 16-18 meatballs.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the meatballs and sear for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add finely chopped onion and cook for 5 minutes until softened.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir. Gradually whisk in beef broth, ensuring no lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Return the meatballs to the skillet, spooning gravy over each one. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through.
  7. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

[‘Don’t overmix the meatball mixture to keep them tender.’, ‘Keep meatballs uniform in size for even cooking.’, ‘Scrape up browned bits after searing meatballs to enhance the flavor of the gravy.’, ‘Adjust seasoning of the gravy to taste before adding the meatballs.’, ‘Gravy can be thickened or thinned by adjusting the amount of beef broth.’]
