Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz elbow macaroni or egg noodles
  • 2 cans (5 oz each) chunk light tuna in water, drained
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk or 2% milk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Boil the pasta in salted water according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually add the milk and chicken broth, whisking continuously until smooth and slightly thickened (about 3-4 minutes).
  4. Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust as needed.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta, drained tuna, frozen peas, and sauce. Mix until evenly coated.
  6. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch casserole dish. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top, followed by the breadcrumbs.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and the breadcrumbs are golden brown.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

[‘Slightly undercook the pasta since it will continue cooking in the oven.’, ‘Grating your own cheese melts better than pre-shredded varieties.’, ‘Breadcrumbs or crushed crackers add a satisfying crunch.’, ‘Customize the flavor with Dijon mustard or paprika.’]
