This easy, festive hot buttered rum cocktail is a cozy winter drink featuring a rich spiced butter mix, dark rum, and warming spices. Perfect for parties or relaxing by the fire, it’s quick to make and endlessly adaptable for all occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 ounces dark rum (per serving)
  • 1 cup hot water (per serving)
  • Optional: cinnamon stick, whipped cream, orange peel twist for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Mix until creamy and uniform.
  2. Add 2 heaping tablespoons of the spiced butter mix to the bottom of a heatproof mug.
  3. Pour 2 ounces dark rum into the mug over the butter mix.
  4. Add 1 cup just-boiled hot water to the mug.
  5. Stir vigorously until the butter mix is fully melted and the drink looks creamy.
  6. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, whipped cream, or orange peel twist if desired.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy immediately.

Notes

Make the spiced butter mix ahead and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. For dairy-free, use vegan butter and coconut milk. Adjust sweetness and spices to taste. If butter doesn’t melt, microwave the mug briefly. For parties, prep a large batch of butter mix and set up a self-serve station.
