Thick slices of Texas toast are slathered with garlicky butter, topped with a blend of mozzarella and sharp cheddar, then baked until golden and bubbly. Served with a cool, creamy homemade ranch dip, these breadsticks are the ultimate easy, crowd-pleasing appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices Texas toast (thick-cut white bread)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 23 tablespoons buttermilk (or milk)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried dill)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Kosher salt & black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
  2. In a small bowl, mash together the softened butter, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, and kosher salt until well combined.
  3. Arrange the Texas toast slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Spread the garlic butter mixture generously over each slice, covering all the way to the edges.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar evenly over the toast slices.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and starting to brown at the edges. Check at 10 minutes to avoid burning.
  7. While the breadsticks bake, make the ranch dip: In a bowl, whisk together sour cream, mayonnaise, buttermilk, dill, chives, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and pepper to taste. Chill until serving.
  8. Remove breadsticks from the oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes. Slice each toast diagonally or into strips. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
  9. Serve warm with ranch dip.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature butter and fresh garlic. Watch your oven closely as cheese can brown quickly. Let breadsticks rest a few minutes before slicing for easier handling. Customize with different cheeses or herbs, or make gluten-free by using gluten-free Texas toast. Breadsticks are best served fresh but can be reheated in the oven or toaster oven.
