This comforting casserole combines tender broccoli, savory ham, and a creamy, flavorful sauce with a golden, bubbly crust. Perfect for weeknight dinners or potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups diced or shredded ham
  • 4 cups fresh broccoli florets, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (Panko or regular)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Steam or sauté the broccoli florets until bright green and slightly tender.
  3. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of flour and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Slowly add 1 ½ cups of milk and 1 cup of chicken broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Simmer until thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat.
  6. In a large bowl, mix steamed broccoli, diced ham, and shredded cheddar cheese. Pour the sauce over the mixture and stir until well combined.
  7. Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  8. Sprinkle breadcrumbs evenly over the casserole and drizzle with melted butter.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  10. Let the casserole sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use fresh broccoli for better flavor and texture. Customize the topping with Parmesan cheese or crushed crackers for extra crunch. Double the recipe for freezing leftovers.
