A quick and easy stir-fry featuring crispy beef and tender broccoli in a savory sauce, perfect for busy weeknights and comforting family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 cups broccoli florets (about 1 large head), washed and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water (for thickening)
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds (optional garnish)
  • Thinly sliced green onions (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Slice the flank steak thinly against the grain into strips about 1/4 inch thick and set aside in a bowl.
  2. Marinate the beef with 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and 2 tablespoons cornstarch. Toss well and let sit for at least 15 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 tablespoons oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Set aside.
  4. Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add broccoli florets and stir-fry for about 2 minutes.
  5. Add 1/4 cup water, cover with a lid, and steam broccoli for 2-3 minutes until bright green and just tender. Remove broccoli and set aside.
  6. Add more oil if needed, then add marinated beef in a single layer. Let sear without moving for about 1 minute to get crispy edges, then stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes until cooked through and crispy.
  7. Return broccoli to the pan with beef. Pour sauce mixture over and stir well.
  8. Add the cornstarch slurry and cook for another 1-2 minutes until sauce thickens and coats everything.
  9. Turn off heat and garnish with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired. Serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of water to loosen it. If too thin, simmer a bit longer. Cook beef in batches to avoid overcrowding and maintain crispiness. For gluten-free, use tamari instead of soy sauce and ensure oyster sauce is gluten-free or omit it.
