Transform ordinary canned pears into a warm, cinnamon-scented dessert with this quick and easy recipe. Ready in under 20 minutes, these spiced pears are perfect for impressing guests or enjoying a cozy treat any day of the week.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (29 ounces each) pear halves, drained
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 to 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • Optional: 3 to 4 whole cloves
  • Optional: 1 strip orange zest

Instructions

  1. Drain the pears in a colander set over a bowl. Reserve the liquid if desired.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water. Stir until sugar begins to dissolve.
  3. Add 3 to 4 cinnamon sticks and any optional spices (cloves or orange zest). Stir to combine.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer. Do not let it boil vigorously.
  5. Simmer the syrup for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly and becomes fragrant.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract.
  7. Gently place the drained pear halves into the warm syrup. Turn to coat each piece.
  8. Let the pears rest in the syrup for 5 to 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  9. Using a slotted spoon, transfer pears to a serving dish or storage container. Pour some syrup over the top. Serve warm or chilled.

Notes

For best flavor, let the pears rest in the syrup for at least 5 minutes before serving. The syrup can be saved and used for pancakes, yogurt, or cocktails. If using ground cinnamon instead of sticks, add 1/2 teaspoon after removing from heat to avoid bitterness.
