Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup (80ml) milk
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon (15g) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup (60g) powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons (15-30ml) milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a small skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the diced apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples soften and caramelize. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. In a separate bowl, combine the egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.
  3. Preheat your waffle maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly grease the waffle plates with cooking spray or melted butter.
  4. Spoon 1-2 tablespoons of batter onto the waffle maker, spreading slightly. Add a small spoonful of the apple filling on top, then cover with another 1-2 tablespoons of batter. Close the waffle maker and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed.
  6. Once the waffle donuts are cooked, transfer them to a cooling rack. Drizzle the glaze over the top and let it set for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

[‘Use firm and slightly tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best flavor.’, ‘Don’t overcrowd the waffle maker to ensure even cooking.’, ‘Let the waffle donuts cool slightly before glazing to prevent the glaze from melting.’, ‘Prepare the apple filling in advance and refrigerate for up to two days to save time.’]
