This irresistible Apple Kringle with Vanilla Glaze is a buttery, flaky pastry layered with spiced apples and topped with a creamy vanilla glaze. Perfect for fall gatherings or a cozy treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 4 medium apples (peeled, cored, and thinly sliced)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter (or forks) to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5-7 minutes, or until the apples soften and the mixture thickens. Set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a rectangle, approximately 12×8 inches. Place the dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. Spread the apple mixture down the center of the pastry, leaving about 2 inches of dough on each side. Fold the sides over the filling, overlapping slightly, and press gently to seal.
  5. Bake the Kringle for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and flaky. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled Kringle.
  7. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

[‘Keep your butter cold for the pastry to ensure flakiness. If it starts to soften, pop it in the fridge for a few minutes.’, ‘Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best texture—they hold their shape beautifully during baking.’, ‘Don’t overwork the dough; it should come together gently without being sticky.’, ‘If your glaze is too thick, add a tiny splash of milk until it reaches the desired consistency.’, ‘For an extra golden crust, brush the pastry with egg wash before baking.’]
